Hairy Woodpeckers are similar to Downy Woodpeckers, except they are larger, have a longer beak and have a louder call (see [link] for more differences). I can usually get good shots of my Downy's because they also perch on smaller branches, but the Hairy's seem to stay around the main trunk of trees - at least from what I observed. I hardly get a shot of them without distracting branches in the way.
Shot through my sliding glass doors.
Hairy Woodpecker (female) Vestal, New York Canon 5D / EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM
Way better than anything I have of this species. I don't know what it is but they are 100 times more difficult to photograph than the Downy. Excellent shot!
Thank you! Keep in mind that most of my birds have been coming to me lately... the Hairy Woodpeckers always let me know when they're around with their constant call. I almost feel like I'm cheating
