You probably won't appreciate this very common bird until you stop and look at the beautiful iridescent colors on his feathers.

I'd like this shot better if the tail wasn't cut off by a branch but when I tried to get a better angle, he flew away. It's tough to sneak up on these birds - they fly away so quickly. It's best to just wait for them to come to you.

Species: Common Grackle
Location: Colonial Park, Somerset, New Jersey
Lens: EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM

Beautifully captured, best shot of this bird I think I've ever seen that shows off those gorgeous feathers.

Yeah I love the color on grackles & their eyes look cool. I got a few pictures of a few in my yard one day but it was overcast & taken thru our screen so I don't think I'll bother posting it. Hopefully I'll get a better shot this year. Also planning to buy my first telephoto lens soon! I can't wait! :camera:

Oh sorry for the off-topic, I  your wildlife shots & this is no exception.

No need to apologize. You'll have fun with a telephoto lens - it's nice to not have to get so close :)

Someone I know used to have a really annoying sparrow or something in her yard; the bird would harass people and animals alike. One day, the story goes, a grackle grabbed this bird, held it to the ground, and impaled it with that impressive beak.

The wildlife in general rejoiced.

The grackle’s feathers are nice, too. :)
