I had the chance to witness mass mobbing of a Red-tailed Hawk up close at Sapsucker woods this weekend. I heard the sounds of crows alerts and went over to where they were calling. Crows, Grackles and Red-winged Blackbirds were all mobbing this Hawk. Mobbing is a behavior occurs when a predator gets cooperatively harassed by the species it may prey on - especially when that species has young nearby. At one point, the Hawk was in the tip of a small branch (pictured) and kept losing balance when the others would dive at him.

This is a very nice photo. I don't know if this was cropped. But feels like it's been cropped in too close...I noticed the you were able to capture it in good lighting.. I wish there was a little more bokeh...The subjects show motion..and the blurriness of the wings on the grackle conveys the notion of the hawk pushing the grackle..especially with the expression of the grackle..Probably would have been better if the tree wasn't there on the right side of the photo.. and maybe the small tree wasn't there on the bottom right corner....The hawk was higher...I think it's just cropped in too close..
This happens all the time to our resident cooper's hawk on campus. Anytime it's around preying on our squirrels, the local ravens and crows chase it away. Lovely photo!
Overall a great capture..
