Description

The Pileated Woodpecker was becoming my backyard nemesis bird to photograph. The only time they would come close is while I was outside working, with no camera in sight. They would be gone by the time I would get my camera.  Yesterday afternoon, while I was painting my deck, I heard that familiar tapping. I looked up to see this male working at a dead tree nearby. I ran inside to get my camera and, even though he flew to another tree when I returned, he went right back to the tree that he was originally pecking. In this photo, you can see chips from the tree flying past him.

The colors in the photograph are exquisite. The bird's red crest focuses the eye to the center and is than able to explore outwards from there. I would criticize the blurred effect of the wood chips as a negative towards the shot, however it is completely understandable with how elusive this bird was to photograph.

With that understanding though I would say another photograph is necessary. This bird's plumage is so striking to the eye because of the monotone colors of the body that transition into the intense red and yellow on the head. It created a memorizing effect in my opinion in which I was captivated to look at it more. However the blurred wood chips counteract this wonderful sensation and remind me that I am once again looking only at a photograph of the bird.

In all it is an astounding feat to have been able to capture the bird with this much clarity and I hope my opinion can be taken more as a cheer and applause to challenge yourself to try again!
