Description

Resubmitting what I think is a better version of [link] because I don't think that one was well received. Of course, just in time for #Photography-APN's Critique Night - I'm really interested in the good and bad that people have to say about this!

As I was watching some seagulls and another distant heron, I saw this heron fly into a tree that was full of cormorants. He kicked one off the branch that he favored and just perched for over an hour. I sat below with my tripod and watched him. Of course, I would have preferred eye level, but I think this perspective makes him look sniper-like.

Selected in NGM's Your Shot Daily Dozen in Week 2 of October

Note: I edited out the tips of branches that were visible (and distracting) in the original; adjustments on levels, curves and sky (post-critique)

One of the best things about this shot is that by shooting from below you managed to capture the detail in the feathering on his chest, which is really beautiful.
I actually prefer the limbs that were in your first submission of this photo, I think the cropping on this one takes it to far out of its element and makes it too simplistic. I would also recommend using a polarizer for shots like this. Lastly, and something that was likely out of your control, is that despite the shot being from below, had the heron been looking at you, it would've been a brilliant capture.
