What is the best way to get a cute life bird? When it lands right at your feet!! This Snow Bunting did just that. We watched this small bird as he landed within feet from us and it was very obvious how exhausted he was from a long flight.
Snow Bunting Myers Point Park Lansing, New York Canon 7D / EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM
The thing that I noticed first about your photograph was a certain true-to-life quality; not only is the bird well in focus and full of detail, the colors seem to be spot-on as well - they are neither to bright nor to dull. This becomes especially clear in comparison with the rather dull background (I suspect it was a rather stormy day?).
Additionally, the composition of the image supports the aforementioned qualities superbly. The bird is just slightly off-center but still the obvious center of attention. Well done!
Given the backstory of landing after a long flight you mentioned in the description, I can't help but imagine the bunting breathing heavily and pausing for a moment before taking flight again.
Overall a very well-executed shot that does not leave much room for improvement; the only thing I could possibly think of would be an even better focus since the body seems to be ever-so-slightly out of focus compared to the head - but that may very well be just my eyes.
